Rumi

The Guest House

A Rumi-inspired reading page on welcoming the changing weather of the self.

Why return to it: It offers a generous way to meet grief, joy, irritation, and surprise without pretending to be beyond them.

Included here: Source-safe original/transliteration where appropriate and a poetic English rendering.

Original / source note

Source note: This is a brief source-safe rendering of a well-known Rumi theme from public-domain pathways.

English transliteration

Har rūz mehmanī digar dar khānah-ye del mīrasad.

Poetic English rendering

The heart is a house of arrivals. Joy enters, sorrow enters, a fear knocks at dawn. Receive each visitor carefully; each may have been sent to clear a room inside you.
